The Maritime Labour Convention (MLC), ratified by Malta in January 2013, has entered into force on 20 August 2013.
The MLC is a landmark instrument setting out decent working and living conditions for seafarers while creating conditions of fair competition for ship-owners. The MLC also seeks to consolidate and modernize more than 68 international labour standards related to the sector which were adopted over the past 80 years.
With Malta’s ratification in January 2013, thirty-four International Labour Organisation members representing 68.2% of the world gross tonnage of ships have ratified the MLC.
Malta has the largest ship register in the EU and the 7th largest register among the States parties to the MLC.
