EqualityMaltaMFSAPromotion of Gender Balance among Directors of Listed Companies

February 20, 2025

Malta has taken a significant step forward in corporate equality with the publication of Legal Notice 39 of 2025 in the Government Gazette on 18 February 2025, serving as the commencement notice for the Promotion of Gender Balance among Directors of Listed Companies Regulations (S.L. 456.04).

This marks a key move, with the Regulations coming into force retroactively on 28 December 2024, aligning with EU Directive 2022/2381 aimed at improving gender balance on corporate boards.

The National Commission for the Promotion of Equality for Men and Women will oversee and support the advancement of gender parity, compiling an annual report on the progress. Additionally, the Malta Financial Services Authority will collaborate by providing data on gender representation and the effectiveness of measures taken to fulfill the Directive’s goals.

This initiative underscores Malta’s commitment to promoting equality in the highest echelons of corporate governance.
